About the book

J.R.R. Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy. He created characters and a world so rich with details--and so unique--that it warranted a whole new vocabulary along with it. His creation of language is not surprising, considering his first civilian job following his service during World War I was working on the Oxford English Dictionary as his. Inside, you’ll find a chronology of Tolkien’s life, along with a short biography and an explanation of his writings. Then flip through the dictionary to discover terms like Aglarond, the great caverns beneath Helm’s Deep, or the Black Riders and the mystery surrounding them--among many other terms. This companion serves as a terrific resource for all those in love with Middle Earth and its inhabitants. Comes complete with a luxurious rich brown flexibound cover.

My Thoughts

I can’t recall how I stumbled on this title one day back in the spring.  But I was somewhat excited about it because we had just finished reading The Hobbit and the two oldest boys had watched the first DVD of The Hobbit as well as the three installments of The Lord of The Rings with us. I knew that this book would be great when we study the books in more details.   However, what I didn’t expect was the detailed carving on the cover of the book to simply delight me beyond imagination.

The book is not very huge but it’s fabulously well presented containing drawings and a map through its pages.   The book is definitively an indispensable guide to the rich, mythical world of Middle-Earth and the Undying Lands.  It is arranged by alphabetical order and will explain the creatures, plants, events, and places that make up the lands mentioned in the Tolkien books.     Below is an example of what you can find through the pages of this book.

If you are a fan of Middle-Earth and books from J.R.R. Tolkien, you definitively don’t want to miss this jewel of a book.  It is a great book to own in your personal library and will allow you to learn more about everything you will find in the world of Tolkien.
