Our Thoughts

First and foremost, I must specify that I am very impressed with the picture on the cover of the book.   But let me tell you that the pictures inside the book are even more breathtaking than this one.IMG_8349

Frogs…  which kid in life doesn’t want to catch some of those slimy creatures.   I remember when I was young going to the lake on the land of my uncle and catching tadpoles at various stages and even a couple of frogs.   Most adults around me didn’t particularly liked my joy and I wondered why.  Now a mom myself, I find myself reacting the same way my aunts, grand-mother and mom reacted when I was younger.

I encourage my kids to explore as much as they can when we are at the lake at our campground.   Because we were leaving for camping I decided to bring this book in our baggage so that the kids can explore it.

This fun book will cover amphibians and reptiles – from frogs to turtles with a bit of snakes and geckos/lizards.  You will learn what their bones looked like, that a frog’s brain is similar to a human’s brain (though much smaller in size), that you can find these creatures everywhere (land, plants, trees, sea, and so on), and much more.  There are also fun activities to do with your kids like try to discover which eye is not a real one or play a game of Snakes and Ladders directly from the book.    One of my favourite pages is the What’s for Dinner? where you can discover what kind of meal an amphibian or reptile would eat.   It is surprisingly different depending of the type of creature it is…  Discover who is the binge-eater, jelly-eater, cruncher, sponge muncher, mite-y eater, fruitivore, cannibal, vegetarian and insectivore.   And to discover that some species of frog, gecko and snake would fly through the air is great for our science lesson of the day!

I think the creature that caught my attention (and others around me) the most is definitively the Glass Frog.   According to the book,

Glass frogs are more transparent from beneath.  You can even see their hearts beating busily in their chest.

In the book, you can see a picture of the Glass Frog sitting on a leave and on the side of the page you can see a picture of it from under a glass table and it is very impressive to see the internal organs of the Glass Frog through its skin.

In this book, you will also learn how to survive an encounter with a crocodile or an alligator, discover what the different jobs where you can work with these animals, how did frog’s legs helped advance science, and learn about record breakers creatures.

This book is a wonderful addition in our homeschool library.    It contains a ton of fun information on frogs and other amphibians/reptiles.   The photos accompanying the text are fabulous and the book is designed very creatively.

Everything You Need to Know About FROGS and Other Slippery Creatures are available at your favourite bookstore, even amazon.ca.
