Our Thoughts

This fun activity book of 64 pages is part of the ones suggested for the What Did You Make on March Break promotion at DK Canada. I didn’t know what to expect from this Blast Lab Activity Book and I was surprised by some of the activities in there.    I think the one that made a bigger impression on us is the one we have picked to do for the purpose of this review.   Prepare to be surprise…

The book contains small experiments that could entertain your child during March Break or during the summer days.    Not only will he/she learn in reading the pages but also in the process of making these experiments.

The book is divided in sections:

  • Rockets & Racers – balloon hovercraft, racing spool, boomerang, flying crown, cone rocket.
  • Brain Busters – moving pictures, seeing in 3-D, Möbius magic, pixel power, optical illusions, quizzes.
  • Body Bits – nose your flavors, sick trick, crazy crackers and balls ‘n’ tights, breating bottle, farting fun.
  • Secret Agent – Eye see you, guilty pen, finding and making prints, intruder alert, dna extraction, quizzes.

As I was flipping through the book I discover fun activities to do with the kids like how to sense the flavors with your nose  or eating crackers upside-down to experiment how you swallow.  But instead, I decided to do the Sick Trick…   Wondering what it is?   Well let just says that the description of this little activity could make your stomach do flopsies…   The sick trick activity will guide you to make edible vomit.   Yes you have read right and honestly I don’t know where they had this idea.   Just thinking about it I feel sick in my stomach.   The kids didn’t want to do it… but mommy thought it would be a different kind of post on her blog.   So we gathered the ingredients and decided to make our own edible vomit.  Beurk!

The recipe calls for sweet corn and carrot but I decided to change this for chopped white KitKat and dried cranberries.

Here’s my son Dominic preparing the mixture….    Being his usual self he added a bit of drama in the picture.  *grin*

The cocoa makes it very dark and I wonder how this will tone down.   Oh well…. we shall see what it looks like tomorrow morning as it need an overnight stay in the fridge.

What can I say…  The reactions was different between the children – the older ones disliked it while the younger two either like it a bit (for the 6 years old) or gobbled it continuously like my 4 years old girl.   It was interesting to see their various reactions and I am thinking that their brain might have played a bit in it – knowing the title of the “experiment”.

The older kids asked me never to do this again…   Though it was sweet and full of ingredients they usually have no problem to eat, the title of the experiment as well as the look of it was definitively not appetizing!

The book also contains more than 800 stickers that your child can use in any way he/she wants.
